Safeguarding

About Safeguarding

Portland Training has a duty to protect all its learnersstaff, volunteers, and visitors from harm and promote their welfare. This includes learners who are currently undertaking one of our courses.

Safeguarding has many meanings. In education it covers the protection of vulnerable children and adults. In the workplace it would also cover the safety of all present through rules and regulations. These rules and regulations are designed not only to safeguard those seen as vulnerable but to maintain a safe working environment with fire procedures, access to site limited to authorised personnel only and adequate welfare facilities.

The 6 Principles of Safeguarding

The Care Act 2014 is a piece of government legislation that deals with protecting and safeguarding adults. It’s a broad-ranging document that considers both carers and those who require care, and when it came into force in 2015, it replaced much of what had gone before.

As part of this, the government created six key principles of safeguarding, which are the important elements of any good safeguarding policy in any organisation, business or even community. While the Care Act, and the principles, are primarily focused towards safeguarding adults, many of the themes are also appropriate when it comes to protecting children and adults from abuseneglect and harm as well.

People being supported and encouraged to make their own decisions and informed consent.

It is better to take action before harm occurs.

The least intrusive response appropriate to the risk resented.

Support and representation for those in the greatest need.

Local solutions through services working with their communities. Communities have a part to play in preventing, detecting and reporting neglect and abuse.

Accountability and transparency in safeguarding practice.

About Vulnerable Adults

A vulnerable adult is defined as a person who, for any reason, may be unable to take care of themselves or protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation. Safeguarding vulnerable adults involves reducing or preventing the risk of significant harm from neglect or abuse, while also supporting people to maintain control of their own lives.
